I'm a music teacher for chinese orchestra, especially string section, and sometimes I teach music theory too. I've taught students who are below 12 and from large-scale primary school, and I found that there's a lot of flaws in the school education system.
Firstly, as generally known, kids are creative, active, curious, cute, pure and sometimes, annoying. I my case, for the class I was teaching. The kids are from different classes and of different ages. Problems come, they have different characteristic as built in their growing environment especially home, and they are mostly affected by the behaviors of the adults they have most frequently made contact with, most probably their parents. I can see, more or less, how much love or attention their parents have given them. I would like to voice in my own perspective that, most of the parents didn't and don't give much attention to their children.
There are many parents think that, using any methods to send their children to a school with so called good performance (that is, have cultivated students with full As in the UPSR, that is, government assessment for primary school students which the school authority refer to when applying for the secondary school) is the best and they will get few problems and can relax a bit. Boom, parents, you are wrong. Sending your children to such schools will just give your children pressures, pressures, more pressures and bad mental growth and nothing more.
As the saying goes, "birds of a feather flock together". We cannot abandon and ignore our human's gifted properties that we'll only find persons with the same characteristic and same interest to be friends. And it also applies to children, they will only play with the friends they like. After sometime, they will eventually form a group of their likes. But the thing is, most of them are still naive, curious and confused of themselves in choosing friends. They might choose wrongly or correctly depending on luck, perhaps, as no proper guidance is available. And when the groups are formed, what will happen to the left-outs? They get the pressure.
Generally, the many the people, the many the problems, as the saying goes, "Too many cooks will spoil the broth". This is true. It might be easy to control the adults than the children, if they were well educated academically, physically and mentally during they young time. But no, I can see now more and more adults are hard to be controlled, I mean working together, as they have experienced terrible childhood. And I think a much higher in number of them might be from large-scale primary schools. After every exam, they will compare with each other, envy the very good ones, and look down on the very poor ones. We cannot assume that: "Aiya, kids are very simple, they won't think like that". Boom, wrong, they will and you will not see that until they make their move, most probably discriminate the two extremes, very poor ones and very good ones. If the two extremes don't know to cope with that, even their parents were not aware of that, then there's no doubt the children will struggle in their mind. The good ones may think of whether to keep a good results, or let the next exam result lower a bit so that he/she can still be the normal-results' friend. For the weaker ones, oh, they might probably just give up and never be able to work hard anymore as they might think that their learning ability is weaker than the others and there's no point to work hard as they can never catch up with the others.
When conducting a lesson, shouting like: "Teacher, his/she pushed me!" , "Teacher, that boy hit Ah Beng!", "Teacher, he stole my pen!", "Teacher, they are running here and there, please punish them!" , "Teacher, how old are you?", "Teacher, he's pulling my hair!" and ETC. And these happened when I turned to the blackboard and tried to write something. You see, I didn't even know who's voice was that, just how could I carry out the teaching smoothly? I wanted to solve their problems, but I couldn't just leave the lesson behind as time is limited, right? That's one of the problems I faced when teaching a lot of children at the same time.
As when I look at the children(about 40+ of them) I was teaching, I don't think most of them will be successful in the future, probably a few, with good home education. The rest, I think no, even they have scored very good results in the school, but without adults' attention to their needs, the consequences might be catastrophic. I think personally that, what the children need is the attention and the caring from the adults. They want to be noticed, same goes to the adults too, and don't like to be scolded, and no adults like to be scolded, me too. I personally suggest that, if any parents want to ensure your children's better life in their future, please pay attention to your children, whenever they need you to. Better life doesn't mean to be a millionaire, but a life that's filled with loves around. Money is very important, but love is even more than that. One precaution is, many parents who don't know how to educate their children might probably spoil them, must be careful. How does it happen? Well, if you buy anything for you children without studying the things that you buy whether they're good or bad, then your kids might think that: "Oh, mummy is going to buy anything for me, so there's no worry, I can have anything!". Oops, then your child is more or less, spoiled.
Putting spoiled children into a large-scale primary school might just worsen the situation. You see, there are many students in the school, and one teacher has to take care of so many students in a class. Do you think the teacher will put their efforts on the spoiled ones? No, most probably not, because normal teacher will see them as an obstacle to their teaching.
Don't blame school teachers. sometimes they just don't have the time and energy to educate your children, because there's a lot more children waiting to be educated! And if you don't know how to choose the best school for your children, they might be getting bad education too, as the quality of the teachers in the school is poor! Generally bad teachers are: not well educated and bad in conveying messages to children. And bad news is, bad teachers are increasing...
Choosing the right school of the children is a hard process. We have to look into many aspects before making a decision. But, what I want to say is, large-scale primary school is definitely not a very good choice, unless you're confident enough that your children are going to be alright and can have a good education there. And be also aware that, your confidence won't guarantee anything, if you are s..p..d.
p/s: I did my best when I was teaching, and teaching a lot of children at the same time was very tiring. That's why I have these thoughts coming out of my mind.
